Hawaii replaces ‘Lost’ with new ‘Five-O’

Honolulu was full of chatter this weekend about the possible return of “Hawaii Five-O” to TV.

Shooting on the pilot is set to start there today.

The remake of the classic ’70s cop show represents a huge tourist potential for the islands, where the original was said to have brought in $100 million a year in business.

Also, the island economy is looking to replace “Lost” — which was made entirely in Hawaii and reportedly contributed about $70 million a year to the economy there, according to reports. That series is ending in May.

Most important, the show played a big part in helping Hawaii establish its image around the world.

It’s not “Five-O’s” first attempt to return. CBS shot a remake of the show in 1997 starring Gary Busey, according to the Honolulu papers. It never aired.
