Steinbrenner on veteran’s Hall of Fame ballot

These are the days George Steinbrenner cherished, when the high-stakes poker of free agency ramped up, fueling the Boss’ competitive jones.

He wore out his general managers on the phone asking for updates and finding out what other clubs were interested in the player he had to have. The Boss called agents telling them the Yankees were the only team the client should play for. He went to Roger Clemens’ Texas home on a recruiting mission.

The summer games meant a lot, but the action of bringing a star to New York stoked The Boss.

So, it’s only fitting that while the Yankees are broaching free-agent talks with Cliff Lee, Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera, it was announced yesterday that Steinbrenner is on the upcoming Hall of Fame veterans’ ballot.

The Boss is one of a dozen candidates the Expansion Era Committee will consider. A candidate has to be named on 12 of the 16 ballots to earn induction. The results will be announced on Dec. 6 at the Winter Meetings in Orlando.

Former Yankees manager Billy Martin also is on the ballot as are ex-Yankees hurlers Tommy John and Ron Guidry.

Steinbrenner’s family issued the following statement about his inclusion on the ballot: “We are honored that our father has been named to the Expansion Era ballot for the Baseball Hall of Fame. We know he would be deeply moved in being considered for entry into baseball’s most hallowed institution.

“We also want to congratulate former Yankees Ron Guidry and Tommy John, along with the family of Billy Martin, for their inclusions as well. All three wore the pinstripes proudly and left indelible marks on the game.”

Longtime general manager Pat Gillick and former union director Marvin Miller join Steinbrenner on the ballot.
