FRIENDSTER ‘NETS A MOVIE DEAL

Just when you thought the Friendster.com craze had ended – it’s Friendster the movie.

The same producers who brought you films like “The Big Chill” and “Reality Bites” have plugged into the popular Internet networking tool by inking a deal to make a movie based around the site, according to a report in Variety.

The site, where people list their friends and discover other users they share friends in common with, has become a breakout online craze.

“Every 10 years or so, there is a great comedy to be done about the way people live, and Friendster fits perfectly into that setting,” said producer Michael Shamberg, who along with co-producer Stacey Sher have made a deal with Friendster CEO John Abrams to make the movie.

“There’s this electronic community where friends come together, people meet when they are not in the same physical space,” Shamberg told Variety. “The best way to do a relationship comedy accurately is to concentrate on what is going on now. There hasn’t been one done like this.”

The film – which is only in the early planning stages – will be more of an ensemble flick like “The Big Chill” than a romantic comedy like “You’ve Got Mail.”
