Holmes misses practice due to injuries

Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes was sidelined Wednesday, just three days after making his return.

Holmes did not practice with foot and hamstring injuries. Holmes missed the five games before Sunday’s game in Buffalo with a hamstring injury. Holmes did not speak to reporters, but coach Rex Ryan said he expects Holmes to be fine.

“It really wasn’t a setback,” Ryan said. “It’s just that today we thought it was best that he miss practice and heal up a little bit. But it wasn’t something that he had a major injury, let’s say. So, I expect him to practice [Thursday].”

Holmes had two catches in his return Sunday, and the Jets desperately need him in their offense.

In other injury news, receiver Jeremy Kerley returned to practice Wednesday but was not able to participate fully. Wearing a red jersey signifying no contact, Kerley caught passes one-handed while the media was watching, not moving his injured left arm, which had a large brace on it. Kerley dislocated his elbow against the Saints on Nov. 3.

During a conference call with reporters in Baltimore, Ryan spoke about his team’s habit of giving up long passes, calling it the Jets’ “Achilles’ heel.” Ryan was asked a question about the Ravens offense.

“I think they’re still obviously very effective at throwing the ball vertically down the field, and that’s something on defense that’s been our Achilles’ heel,” he said. “We certainly have to do a good job of that. Joe [Flacco] can make all the throws — we know that. He’s a special player, and he’s proved that over and over.”

Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs has a team-high nine sacks, and you can bet he’s coming for Jets quarterback Geno Smith on Sunday. Suggs was asked about Smith in Baltimore on Wednesday.

“He’s definitely a quarterback with the potential to either win the game for them or give it away,” Suggs said. “We’ve got to go out and play our football, first and foremost.”

There have been comparisons between Smith’s season and Mark Sanchez’s rookie year with the Jets, particularly when it comes to the turnover department. But Smith is not a fan of those comparisons.

“I’m not Mark,” Smith said. “I don’t think it’s fair to compare his season to mine. It’s two different seasons, two different guys, two different players, two different styles, two different systems. I know you guys want to compare every single thing, but it doesn’t make a difference.”

The Jets signed OLB Jermaine Cunningham, the 2010 second-round pick of the Patriots. New England cut him in training camp and he spent about a month with the 49ers in October before they cut him. … K Nick Folk is second in the fan voting for the Pro Bowl. He is the only Jet player who would make the Pro Bowl based on the current fan voting. The Pro Bowl is decided by a combination of the votes of fans, players and coaches.
