IN GEOGRAPHY OLYMPICS, AMERICANS AT SEA

It’s a small world, but geography-challenged Americans are lost at finding many of its 193 countries.

The United States yesterday ranked 115th on the online Geography Olympics, a free international competition which has players from 187 countries at http://www.geographyolympics.com.

St. Lucia snagged the top spot at locating 10 randomly selected countries on a map in 200 seconds.

Americans “are awful at geography,” said Roger Andresen[o’m: cq: ] of Atlanta, who dreamed up the quiz.

“We have to know geography to understand international events,” he said.

“Americans only know where 18 of the world’s 193 countries are on average,” he said. For instance, 87 percent of Americans cannot find Iraq and 83 cannot find Afghanistan.

New York isn’t on the map either when it comes to having a geographical IQ. Yesterday, the state ranked 46th in the country.
