MARCHAND’S MATCHUP OF THE WEEK – DAVID JUSTICE VS. RICK SUTCLIFFE (WHO IS A BETTER ANALYST?)

Both David Justice and Rick Sutcliffe of ESPN own a rare sportscasting skill. Though they both have a lot of on-air personality, they are cool enough that they don’t overwhelm a broadcast. They stand out without a “Can you hear me now?” approach.

Both usually dissect why something happens and then top it off with their own opinion.

Justice has no problem first- or second-guessing moves. He seems excited to do it, but doesn’t force it.

He may have swiped his blueprint from the confident Sutcliffe’s back pocket. Sutcliffe doesn’t mind criticizing. He does it informatively, not meanly, because most of his opinions seem inspired from first-hand research.

Announcers don’t make viewers watch games. They do add enjoyment, especially in a strategy-based sport such as baseball. In the end, Sutcliffe takes this tight Matchup. He had 171 victories in his major-league career, but none could possibly be as satisfying as this one.
