ROG KEEPS DATE WITH GOOFY

Roger Clemens needs a vacation.

Clemens told ESPN he still plans to attend “ESPN The Weekend” in Disney World, as scheduled. The 45-year-old, who will make an appearance before Congress tomorrow, will travel to Orlando for the Feb. 29-March 2 promotional engagement.

The decision could be considered a surprise since ESPN cut a humorous commercial promoting Clemens’ appearance at the vacation hot spot. Soon after, Clemens’ name appeared in the Mitchell Report.

The network asserted it did not feel comfortable running the ad with Clemens involved with an issue of such a controversial nature.

“Each decision is a different decision with different factors involved,” an ESPN spokesman said. “One was a commercial within the context of being juxtaposed and intertwined with news coverage of an event. The other is a pre-scheduled event that he has told us since then he is attending and we are interested in having him there.”

The spokesman said ESPN did not consider wavering in its offer to Clemens.
