Piers Morgan grilled about Mirror phone hacking

Piers Morgan has been questioned by Scotland Yard detectives investigating phone hacking at the Mirror Group of newspapers, according to media reports Friday.

“In early November I was asked to attend an interview by officers from Operation Weeting when I was next in the UK,” Morgan said in a statement to a London newspaper.

“I attended that interview as requested on [Dec. 6, 2013],” Morgan said in the statement.

The investigation has received allegations from witnesses that Morgan, who was editor of London’s Daily Mirror from 1995 to 2004, was aware of phone interception at the publication.
Morgan, now the host of a CNN show, has denied the allegations.

The 48-year-old journalist was previously editor of the News of the World, where several former employees are standing trial on criminal phone-hacking charges. Scotland Yard’s December interview with Morgan was conducted under caution, which means police have grounds to suspect a person of an offense.
