NYRA GOLF TOURNEY ON TAP

The New York Racing Association will hold its 19th annual Horsemen’s Golf Tournament Tuesday, Oct. 12, at the Piping Rock Club in Locust Valley. The general public is invited to compete.

After brunch from 10 a.m. to noon and a Calcutta auction at 11, tee-time is set for 12:30 p.m. Cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a gourmet buffet follow the awards ceremony. For more information, call tournament director Bill Hirsch at (718) 428-5167.

This afternoon, bring the brats for some wurst, put a liter in your hosen and don’t be a sour Kraut when Belmont Park hosts its yearly Oktoberfest in the backyard tent, featuring authentic German food and beer served to the oom-pah music of the Royal Bavarians.

1ST RACE – Alexthethird stalked the early pace set by The Party Chairman. He stayed close to the pace turning for home and wore down The Party Chairman to get the lead nearing the wire. Diggy made a wide move to reach contention and battled with the top two down the stretch but lost the photo for win and place.

2ND RACE – Nitecap broke on top and set the pace while Renoir pressed in second. Chancery Court made a three wide to reach contention while Renoir raced greenly and tired. Nitecap still had plenty left in the stretch and drew off to the victory with Chancery Court an easy second.

3RD RACE – Mass Market was ignored in the win pools and took advantage of a speed duel to win at 17-1. Afternoon Affair and Nunzio battled for the early lead with Repetition trying to keep pace. Nunzio put away those two, but Edgar Prado angled Mass Market off the rail and ran down Nunzio in the stretch for the victory.

4TH RACE – Tears Of Joy took the lead soon after the start and then held off the fast closing Firmness to win her career debut. Firmness had an outside trip throughout and was second best. Favored Timbalier Bay chased the pace but never got involved and fell back to sixth.

6TH RACE – Maundays Bay made her first start since January and the addition of Lasix made all the difference to her. She broke well and set the pace and held off Dream For A Moment for the victory. Dream For A Moment made a three wide move on the turn but could not gain ground on Maundays Bay in the stretch. Polina was caught five wide on the turn and tired in the stretch drive.

8TH RACE – John Kimmel won his second race of the day with a layoff horse as Scatmandu was making his first start since February and was a gate to wire winner. Scatmandu withstood the early pressure from Dice Dancer and pulled away in the stretch. Watchman’s Warning raced wide around the turn and closed powerfully in the stretch but ran out of track to be second bast.
