AFL-CIO BACKING GORE

Vice President Al Gore is headed to Los Angeles today to pick up the AFL-CIO’s endorsement in person tomorrow – and a new poll shows how badly he needs it.

The CNN poll shows Gore now leads sole Democratic rival Bill Bradley by just 12 points nationally – down from a 33-point lead last month. The new poll puts Gore at 51 percent to Bradley’s 39 percent.

The endorsement by the 13-million-member union will bring Gore grass-roots troops and phone-bank help at a time when he has to watch his pennies because of early big spending.
