Once upon a time, Christie was ecstatic about an open bridge

Thirty years ago Chris Christie was happy when a bridge was kept … open.

After winning one of his first elections, as student body president at the University of Delaware, Christie expressed thanks that a key bridge would be ready for use for graduation ceremonies.

In a student newspaper story unearthed by Talking Points Memo, the 21-year-old Christie said, “Construction on the walking bridge will begin in January, but the bridge itself and traffic crossing it will not be affected until 1985.”

“There will be no impediment for June 1984 commencement, at least as planned now,” the future New Jersey governor said.

Disclosure of his remarks comes as Christie and key allies and aides are being investigated for allegedly closing key lanes of the George Washington Bridge last September to retaliate against Fort Lee’s mayor, for failing to support Christie’s re-election.
