CBS PATS SELF ON BACK

KATIE Couric’s new pro ducer, Rick Kaplan, has been on the job for a little over a week – but he’s already impacting the “CBS Evening News,” according to a CBS News blogger.

“One thing that is worth noting . . . is something that happened on Friday,” associate producer Brian Montopoli wrote on the newscast’s blog, “Public Eye,” referring to Couric’s March 16 interview with fired U.S. Attorney David Iglesias.

“A taped hard news interview in the first block involving Katie Couric . . . I’m hard-pressed to remember the last time Couric did something like this . . . ”

Kaplan was brought aboard to give a harder edge to Couric’s newscast – mired in third place since she replaced Bob Schieffer last September.

“I will say it’s certainly nice to see Couric talking to someone like Iglesias and not, say, Mt. Hood widow Karen James.”
