MIKE GOES FROM BARD TO VERSE

Every poem delivers a message, but it’s weightier when it’s by the mayor.

For the seventh annual “Poetry in My Pocket Day” celebration, Mayor Bloomberg released a poem yesterday extolling the virtues of volunteerism.

One verse began:

“Read to kids / Mentor one “Help some seniors / Have some fun “Serve some soup / Or plant trees “Spend some time at food pantries”

He concluded with a deserved poke at the Big Apple’s very highly paid but woefully underachieving Major League Baseball teams.

“Help in any way, kind volunteers “You’ll receive New Yorkers’ cheers “But right now, to get the biggest thanks “Help the pitching on the Mets and Yanks”

Those were certainly sentiments that shouldn’t be lost — even if they didn’t come across as Robert Frost.
