HOMER BID TO STAMP OUT RECORD

Can the Simpsons stick it to Elvis?

Don’t have a cow, but Homer and his family could peel the King off his throne as the nation’s most popular US commemorative stamp.

Yesterday, the cost of a first-class stamp rose 2 cents, to 44 cents. Those who thought ahead and stockpiled Forever stamps can use them anytime without having to add extra postage.

But among the new 44-cent designs are 1 billion Simpsons stamps — featuring Homer, Bart, Marge, Lisa and Maggie.

“I think the Simpsons stamps will have the best chance to give Elvis a run for his money,” David Failor, the US Postal Service’s executive director of stamp services, said yesterday.

The USPS defines “most popular” in terms of how may stamps are saved and collected — not used to mail something.

The Elvis stamp sold for 29 cents in 1993 and 124.1 million were saved.
