Taxicab confessions

THE ISSUE: Taxicab driver Medhat Mohamed’s decision to order a gay couple out of his cab.

For Mayor Bloomberg to say that the taxicab driver shouldn’t have been distracted by what happened in his back seat is ridiculous (“Mike Whacks Hack,” Nov. 6).

If it were a man and a woman fondling one another in the back seat, it is doubtful it would be considered an orientation issue. Rather, it would be seen as endangering the safety of the vehicle and, thereby, the driver himself.

Presumably, the driver is in a better position to know what is distracting him than is Bloomberg. For politicos to shamelessly pile on only to curry favor in the name of political correctness is silly.

I’m shocked at Andrea Peyser’s brazen prejudice against gay people (“Don’t Ask, Don’t Look,” Nov. 5).

She writes, “In this town, gay rights trump religious and aesthetic sensitivities every time.”

Aesthetic sensitivities? Can you imagine if Peyser substituted gay rights in that same sentence with African-American, Muslim or Jewish rights?

Her irresponsible article is sickening and stokes the flames of intolerance and bigotry.
