A SHORT AND SWEET TASTE OF GOAL-LINE PLAY

ALBANY — If you blinked, you missed the first live goal-line drills of camp. There were only two plays run yesterday afternoon, and both were dominated by the defense.

“Give ’em a little taste,” Tom Coughlin said.

The first play, run from inside the 2-yard line, featured both starting units. Brandon Jacobs carried the ball and Jay Alford penetrated, forcing Jacobs into the waiting arms of Justin Tuck and Kenny Phillips for no gain.

The second units were on the field for the second play, with Ahmad Bradshaw forced outside and Chase Blackburn making the tackle.

Eli Manning spent another day in camp keeping mum about his six-year, $97.5 million contract extension. An agreement has been reached but the deal is not yet signed.

The first injury of training camp is Ryan Kennelly, the 14-year old son of assistant head trainer Steve Kennelly. During Thursday night’s practice, Ryan was holding up a rectangular tackling dummy during the 7-on-7 passing drill. LB Zak DeOssie pushed rookie TE Travis Beckum at the line of scrimmage, and the 6-foot-3, 239-pound Beckum lost his balance and tumbled over Ryan and the tackling dummy, resulting in a fractured left wrist.

“Three, four weeks he’ll be fine,” Steve Kennelly said. “He wants to stick it out, he doesn’t want to go home, he still wants to do his job. He’s got a story for the rest of his life. His first training camp as a ballboy. It was just a freak thing, an accident, that’s all there is to it.”

A camp-high crowd of 6,720 was in attendance for Autograph Day … Safety C.C. Brown and LB Jonathan Goff had interceptions, giving the defense 14 in the first seven practices … David Carr fired deep downfield and hit rookie WR Hakeem Nicks for a 35-yard completion, with Nicks beating rookie CB Stoney Woodson. On the next play, WR Derek Hagan ran by Woodson and hauled in a 30-yard pass. That prompted defensive backs coach David Merritt to shout, “That’s a first-class ticket back to South Carolina.” Woods attended South Carolina.

Coughlin excused WR Taye Biddle from today’s practice to attend the funeral of his grandmother in Alabama … G Rich Seubert (shoulder) is expected to return to practice early next week.
