Military Families Can Benefit from New Coupon Booklet Created by CB 10

The close relationship between Fort Hamilton and the community in which it is situated was underlined recently by the efforts of members of Community Board 10 to make it a little easier for military personnel and their families.

The board created a coupon booklet with discounts provided by local businesses for members of the military and their dependents that was previewed at the September general board meeting, when CB 10 Chairperson Dean Rasinya and Judith Collins, the chairperson of the board’s Military and Veterans Affairs Committee, presented a copy to Command Sergeant Major Sylvia Laughlin, the senior enlistment advisor for Fort Hamilton.

“You are second to none,” Laughlin told board members after receiving a copy of the booklet. “We truly appreciate it. I’ve served all over the world and I have never seen the level of patriotism I see here on a daily basis.”

The booklet was created over a period of months, said Collins, with committee members going door to door to local stores and restaurants “to solicit discounts for military families,” who will be able to receive the discounts by showing their military IDs. Backup support was provided by the board office, she added.

Besides providing a list of the 45 local establishments that are participating in the discount program, the booklet also contains a reference guide that the families can use that lists schools, houses of worship and after-school sports programs in the community, Collins said.
