DA let host deliver the drama

The Home Office has a lot of clout.

After lawyers for “Late Night” host David Letterman went to the Manhattan’s DA with allegations of a shakedown by Robert “Joe” Halderman, the funnyman insisted he should break the news of the case his own way — on his own show last Thursday night.

The DA’s Special Prosecution Bureau, where one of Letterman’s legal team had a contact, had wanted to announce the sting and arrest earlier.

The decision landed in the lap of DA Robert Morgenthau — who signed off on conceding the announcement to the comic. It meant a one-day delay for Halderman’s arraignment for attempted grand larceny.
