Storm destroys Long Island beach

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. — A Long Island official says a popular beach has been “all but devastated” by the record-setting rainstorm that deluged the region.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray says Lido Beach West likely lost hundreds of thousands of cubic yards during the recent rainstorm. Murray says town officials are seeking federal aid.

She said a beach renewal project approved in November called for replenishing 200,000 cubic yards of sand at the Atlantic Ocean beach. Now, she estimates nearly double that amount of sand will be required.

Murray says 200,000 people visited the beach last year, but says “there’s just no way” there will be room for that many visitors this summer.

Other state and locally run beaches across Long Island also suffered varying degrees of erosion.
