Feds not jumping to conclusions on Mexican Target suspects

Those Target hackers sure are slippery fellows.

Every time someone announces they’re close to catching the cyber crooks responsible for last month’s massive security breach at the popular retailer, the target shifts.

It happened again on Tuesday when the Secret Service, which has been working the case, tossed a bit of cold water on statements from the McAllen, Texas, police that a Mexican man and woman arrested crossing into the US were connected to the giant heist.

They may be — but federal agents want to take a closer look.

“In regard to the arrests announced yesterday, the Secret Service is working with the US Attorney’s Office and McAllen Police Department to determine if there is any connection,” an agency spokesman said Tuesday.

The Target security breach hit as many as 110 million shoppers last holiday season.

Last week, a security firm said the architect of the malware used in the heist is a 17-year-old Russian. The firm downgraded the kid a few days later to the malware author’s technical support.
