Phone chargers in new NYC cabs

New Yorkers can now hail the Taxi of Tomorrow after the first two futuristic cabs hit the streets last week.

Ranjit Singh, 47, of Floral Park was the first cabbie to purchase the Nissan NV200– and the 6-foot-3 driver said he had been eagerly to buy it because of the extra leg room.

“It’s because I’m a tall guy,” he said. “I’m the first driver who bought the car. It’s got a lot of space for customers and me, the driver.”

He said he has been feeling less tired working ten to eleven hour shifts because of the extra space, and that his customer loves the amenities in the cab.

They include a sun roof, temperature controls, and phone charging ports.

TLC Commissioner David Yassky said it was exciting that passengers are now hailing it on the streets.

“After years of explaining its comforts and amenities to people, and showing them photos and diagrams, they will now be able to hail one and see it, feel it and enjoy it,” he said.

A state judged ruled earlier this month that the Taxi and Limousine Commission exceeded its authority by mandating that cab drivers purchase the Taxi of Tomorrow. The city is appealing the ruling.

Regardless of the courts, the NV200 is still an approved vehicle for cabs– and drivers can purchase it if they want it.

Six Nissan dealers are selling the Taxi of Tomorrow, including Koeppel Nissan in Jackson Heights and Kings Nissan in Jackson Heights.
