Twitter and Ping a team

New Twitter CEO Dick Costolo is wasting no time getting down to business.

The micro-blogging service announced yesterday that it’s teaming with Apple’s Ping, the new social-networking service for iTunes users.

The partnership aims to make it easier for people to share video and music content and iTunes links through tweets on Twitter.com.

According to a Twitter spokesman, users could previously post iTunes links but were directed outside of Twitter’s ecosystem.

Users can also sync their Twitter and Ping accounts, which will show their song previews and iTunes links in a panel on Twitter’s newly designed Web site.

The partnership should help drive iTunes purchases and make Ping “stickier” for new users. Apple and Facebook talked about a similar integration but failed to reach a deal.

“Apple should be doing backflips,” said Chris Cunningham, co-founder of social-media focused ad boutique Appssavvy. “They’ve just secured a partnership with one of the largest social media companies with the fastest growth to get distribution.”

Costolo, who was Twitter’s COO until October, when he took over for Evan Williams as CEO, has been making a slew of announcements in recent weeks.
