Mets sign pitchers Capuano, Buchholz

If nothing else, Mets GM Sandy Alderson is staying true to his word that he wasn’t going to make any major moves this offseason.

Alderson added lefty Chris Capuano yesterday on a one-year deal. The 32-year-old fits the mold for what the Mets have been looking for since Alderson took over heading into 2011.

He’s been productive in the past, but red flags, including a pair of Tommy John surgeries — the most recent in 2008 — make him inexpensive. Capuano was an All-Star in 2006 and won 18 games in 2005.

He missed all of the 2008 and 2009 seasons before returning to the Brewers last year. He went 4-4 with a 3.95 ERA in 24 appearances last year, including nine starts.

Capuano could compete to be the team’s fifth starter in spring training and, because the deal is believed to be in the $1 million range, the Mets should still be able to target other free agent starters like Chris Young or Jeff Francis.

The Mets also signed RHP Taylor Buchholz to a one-year contract and designated Ryota Igarashi for assignment to make room on their 40-man roster.

Buchholz, 29, pitched a total of nine games out of the bullpen for the Rockies and Blue Jays last season, one year removed from elbow surgery — while Igarashi was a bust after coming over from Japan.
