Big Apple in a heap of trouble

New York is starting to look like one big trash dump, as the blizzard has forced city officials to suspend trash pickup indefinitely and bags of garbage start to pile up in the streets.

“This is ridiculous!” said Shane Kramer, a real-estate agency owner whose business on West 13th Street has been blocked by numerous bags of neighbors’ trash.

“This is in front of my office, both sides. You gotta think, anticipate this sort of thing. When I came in this morning, I was kind of pissed off,” said Kramer, whose private service was able to cart his business trash.

“If they can move it, why can’t the city?” he wondered.

At the nearby restaurant Cowgirl, owner Michelle Wakefield has had to pay staff overtime to bag up garbage that has overflowed from her cans.

She has private pickup, but the lack of snow removal is keeping them from getting to her store.

“I’ve never seen it this bad,” said Wakefield, who has been there 13 years.

The Sanitation Department couldn’t say exactly when the trash would be picked up again, only noting that Mayor Bloomberg yesterday said the service would be suspended until further notice.
