Girls volleyball roundup: English leads Spellman in five-set thriller

Cari English had 10 kills, 15 digs and four solo blocks to lead Cardinal Spellman to a rollercoaster, 15-25, 25-14, 25-27, 25-10, 25-8 win against host Maria Regina in CHSAA Bronx/Westchester girls volleyball Wednesday. Regina was coming off its first sweep of Preston in four years.

Siobhan Flattery had seven assists, 11 digs, four kills and three aces, Olivia O’Farrill had eight kills and 16 digs and Amanda Butler had seven digs and four kills for Spellman (7-1), which meets Good Counsel on Thursday. Laura McCaffrey had 12 assists and JoMarie Aquino added three aces.

St. Catharine 3, Good Counsel 0: Elaine Ruiz had nine kills, Amarilda Shkoza had seven kills and Charlayne Hurlington had five blocks to lead St. Catharine (12-0) to a 25-17, 25-14, 25-7 win in Bronx/Westchester. Octavia Paylor added 17 assists.

PSAL CLASS A

No. 1 Francis Lewis 2, Bayside 0: Paulina Jobczyk had nine kills, Jessica Chung had 14 assists and Ragina Anthony added four digs for Lewis (5-0) in a 25-11, 25-23 win in Queens A6. Senior middle Alexandra Persaud, who injured her knee Monday at the Francis Lewis Match Play Tournament, has yet to take an MRI, but will be miss at least a few weeks. Bayside is 2-4.

No. 5 Susan Wagner 2, McKee/Staten Island Tech 0: Emily Burke had 13 kills, Esther Jang had 16 assists and Pola Poskrobko added four aces to lead Wagner (6-0) to a 25-19, 25-15 win in Staten Island A9. MSIT is 3-3.

No. 8 Bronx Science 2, Clinton 0: Dominique Watt had five kills, Mary Platt had four kills and Elissa Shiau added 11 assists and nine aces to lead Science (6-0) to a 25-6, 25-12 win in Bronx A1. Clinton is 1-5.

Townsend Harris 2, RFK 0: Caroline Egan had seven kills, Joon Hee Aum had seven assists and Sahi Thapi had six assists and six aces to lead Harris (4-1) to a 25-13, 25-10 win in Queens A6. RFK is 0-6.

Long Island City 2, Newtown 0: Lucia Stosic had five kills and two blocks, Patricia Grippi had nine assists and Chelsea Paredes added five aces to lead LIC (4-2) to a 25-16, 25-13 win in Queens A7. Newtown is 2-3.

Bryant 2, Van Buren 1: Zlatina Baeva had six kills and 13 aces to lead Bryant (4-1) to an 18-25, 26-24, 25-17 win in Queens A8. Maria Petropoulos had four kills, four digs and five aces, Jasmina Hamza had four kills and Kathleen Dos Santos added nine assists. Van Buren is 4-2.

Flushing 2, Edison 0: Melissa Sanchez had five kills, Jeannie Tran had five digs and four aces and Gladys Aguilar had 11 assists for Flushing (4-2) in a 25-8, 25-20 win in Queens A8. Edison is 2-4.

Cleveland 2, Academy of American Studies 0: Carolina Alfonso Reyes had 16 kills, 10 digs, two blocks and eight aces to lead Cleveland (1-4) to a 25-14, 25-18 win in Queens A7. Menajda Mezini had 20 assists and Angelica Aquino had four digs. American Studies is 2-4.

Curtis 2, Petrides 0: Danielle Santucci and Mary Anderson each had five kills, Taylor O’Gara had 10 assists and Erin Jacobson added eight aces to lead Curtis (3-3) to a 25-11, 25-7 win in Staten Island A9. Petrides is 1-6.

Riverdale/Kingsbridge 2, Evander Childs 0: Kelsey Ellis had eight kills and five aces and Brittany Guzman had seven assists and five aces to lead RKA (6-0) to a 25-6, 25-20 win in Bronx B1. Alberita Rugova added five aces. Evander Childs is 2-3.

John Adams 2, Queens Vocational Tech 0: Ambar Abreu had eight kills, four digs and four aces and Heidy Ledesma added five assists for Adams (6-0) in a 25-11, 25-11 win in Queens B10. Queens Vo is 0-6.

Scholars Academy 2, Beach Channel 0: Nicole Glaz had six kills and 10 aces and Rebecca Moers had eight assists to lead Scholars (6-1) to a 25-12, 25-19 win in Queens B9. Beach Channel is 2-4.
