Maryland officials yesterday torpedoed a plan to turn hundreds of New York City subway cars into a fish-rich offshore reef.
Ocean City, Md., officials say they’re backing out of a deal to take up to 1,300 Redbird cars used on the IRT No. 7 line because they contain asbestos.
The resort town had agreed to let the Transit Authority sink the cars eight miles offshore in a project approved by the Environmental Protection Agency. Similar artificial reefs elsewhere have been a boon to fish and other marine life.
Delaware and New York officials are now weighing whether to dump the cars off their states’ shores.
