UConn gets major boost with Kentan Facey cleared

Kentan Facey’s wait is over, and UConn couldn’t be happier.

The 20-year-old Jamaica native and prized freshman recruit was granted a waiver by the NCAA and will have four years of eligibility left, a source told The Post on Friday.

The NCAA was questioning whether the 6-foot-9 Facey’s college eligibility started early while he was attending high school in Jamaica, a process that began in August.

He celebrated the good news on Twitter Friday morning.

The Hartford Courant reported Facey passed a standardized test in Jamaica before coming to Long Island Lutheran that could be considered the equivalent of graduating high school, which would violate the NCAA”s “delayed enrollment” rule. He was allowed to practice with the Huskies as the NCAA determined his eligibility status.

The addition of Facey is a major boost for UConn, which needed the depth inside to match its array of skilled wing and perimeter threats. The Huskies, picked to finish second in the new American Athletic Conference, are ranked 19th in the preseason AP top 25 poll.

Facey didn’t start playing basketball until the age of 15. He proved to be a quick study and ended up at Long Island Lutheran through the Jamaica Basketball Development camp. He excelled at the Brookville powerhouse, landing scores of high-major Division I scholarship offers, and committed to UConn with AAU teammate Terrence Samuel, a Brooklyn native.
