This week’s couple: Last meal

SOMETIMES, our daters have specific needs. This week, with Carlin, 25, and Sean, 36, we had to find a place friendly to Carlin’s no-gluten diet. So we sent them to Hell’s Kitchen to enjoy selections from the special gluten-free menu at Casa Nonna. Was the quickest way to each other’s heart through their stomachs? Or was one course enough?

He said:

I arrived at the maitre d’s station five minutes early, at the same time as an exquisite woman. When we gave our names, I realized it was Carlin, and we were meeting for the first time. I loved Carlin’s smile, which was enhanced by her personality. She had to order from the gluten-free menu so I ordered from it too. One of the highlights was a gluten-free sorbet we shared.

Carlin and I are at different parts in our lives, however. The schedule she keeps, due to being a comic, would not jive well with my schedule as corporate counsel. But I did get her number, and shot her a text the next day. She indicated she would like to remain friends, and I agree. With a smile like hers, who wouldn’t want her as a friend?

She said:

I was admittedly a little disappointed to see I towered over Sean, but I wasn’t going to let something like that affect my night. Once we got to talking, though, things fell into place more comfortably. Sean is a sentimentalist: We both keep a box of old birthday cards, notes, etc., that we’ve had for several years.

We ordered from the gluten-free menu, and it was quiet enough in the restaurant that we could actually hear each other.

But Sean and I are at slightly different phases of our lives: He’s in his mid-30s; I’m in my mid-20s and love kids, but also love being in my 20s. Sean is an absolute standout guy, but definitely more platonic from my end. I did have a nice time, though.
