This week’s couple: Ice breakers

SPORTS are usually a great way for people to bond. So when Michael, 29, and Sam, 31, discovered they both appre-ciated skates and pucks over dinner at the Gramercy steakhouse BLT Prime, the ice was easy to break. Did they score a goal to put their date into overtime or did things end up going to H-E-double-hockey sticks?

He said:

Sam and I arrived at the same time. She looked exactly as she described herself, which was a relief.

We talked about our upbringings and sports. We’re both hockey fans — I like the New York Rangers and Sam the Detroit Red Wings — and she is definitely a true fan.

BLT Prime gave us the royal treatment. We shared appetizers and dessert and had three drinks each during our three hours there.

The one thing I didn’t like about Sam is she seemed a little conservative. But she was very smart, fun and easy to talk to.

At the end of the night, I asked for her number. I would see her again, but I would want more of a platonic relationship.

She said:

I had a feeling Mike was my date because he was tall, and I was told [the guy I was meeting] was 6-foot-4. He’s more strapping and clean-cut than my usual type, but good-looking.

I was hoping to impress Mike by eating all my bone-in rib-eye steak, but I couldn’t finish. I filled up on BLT’s delicious appetizers.

We are both hockey lovers, which is rare, so we spent time talking about that. Mike was a gentleman but nothing funny or interesting happened. He never made me laugh, which is important in my book.

Mike got my phone number. I’m not sure if we’ll hang out again, but if he asked I’d be willing to go out again — especially for a hockey game!
