Jets’ Sanchez unlikely to be piece in Revis, Buccaneers deal

The latest trade rumor involving Darrelle Revis is a real doozy.

The website Pro Football Talk reported Friday the Jets and Buccaneers have discussed including quarterback Mark Sanchez in a trade for Revis. A source told The Post it is highly unlikely Sanchez would be included in the trade.

It is hard to imagine any scenario where the Buccaneers would want Sanchez because of his price tag ($8.25 million base salary). Tampa also has leverage because they are the only team seriously interested in trading for Revis. If they are willing to put the right draft pick combination together, it seems like this deal will get done. They would not have to sweeten the deal by taking Sanchez off the Jets’ hands.

Any trade for Revis is expected to happen in the week before the April 25 NFL Draft. Tampa Bay’s doctors would have to evaluate Revis’ surgically repaired left knee before any trade could be done. The Buccaneers also will want to finalize a long-term contract with Revis before finalizing a trade.

Sanchez is coming off a disappointing 2012 season and there was a thought the Jets would try to trade him, but any trade talk seems too unrealistic with Sanchez’s inflated salary.

Sanchez has been working with former NFL quarterback Jeff Garcia in Southern California over the last month. Garcia apparently thinks it’s time the Jets dump backup quarterback Tim Tebow. The Jets begin offseason voluntary workouts Monday and Tebow plans on being there if he is still on the roster.

“If there’s going to be competition at the position, it’s not going to come from Tim Tebow,” Garcia told USA Today. “Having Tebow there [last season] just became more of a distraction, more of a circus show. Obviously, it’s their decision. But from an outsider looking in, having Tebow there doesn’t bring anything positive. It just brings distraction. For Mark, the main competition is going to be with David Garrard and Greg McElroy.”

The Jets have been trying to trade Tebow this offseason with no success. The Jets signed Garrard to give Sanchez some training camp competition. Tebow is not expected to be on the team when the 2013 season arrives, but the Jets have held onto him for some unknown reason.
