Firefighters injured after fire truck flips over

NEWBURGH — Five firefighters responding to a traffic accident on the New York State Thruway were injured on a nearby road when this fire truck swerved to avoid an oncoming car, hit a guardrail, flipped on its side and rolled onto its roof, police said Sunday.

The crash of the Plattekill Fire Department truck occurred at about 9:10 p.m. Saturday about 75 miles northwest of New York City, said Newburgh police.

The five firefighters were treated at hospitals for non-life-threatening injuries.

The truck was pulled upright and removed from the road.

It was headed east when a westbound car crossed partly into the eastbound lane and the truck swerved on the wet pavement, police said.

The car’s driver left the scene without stopping, cops said.
