Filters matter for catching Instagram ‘likes’

So you’ve spent precious minutes framing your object, then agonized over the filter … and hours later, you haven’t scored a single like.

Well there’s a reason your Instagram pics aren’t attracting the attention you think they deserve, and it could hold the key to your success at online dating too.

US marketing whiz-kids Curalate scoured millions of Instagram pics to work out what makes a photo popular with other users.

The Daily Mail reports that their research found people are drawn to photos with blue tints, which yield 24 per cent more likes than predominantly red or orange images.

Also, happy snaps with a high proportion of background space attract 29 per cent more likes than images that are closely cropped.

The firm analysed 8 million Instagram posts for 30 different factors, including color and saturation.

They found a photo was more likely to be liked if one color dominated the composition – and only about 10 per cent of Insta pics have an obviously dominant color, so get the edge on your love rivals with that handy tip.

A light photo will generally be more popular than a dark one, and picking a filter that drains colour (such as Walden or Rise) will usually bag more likes.

Now you’ve got no excuses. Get snapping.
