Smartphones will overtake PCs in 2014

The world will no longer be PC by early next year, however it will be smart.

Smartphones will be the most prevalent computer device surpassing personal computers by mid 2014, according to a tweet by technology analyst Benedict Evans from Enders Analysis.

Evans points out that smartphone sales have far outpaced the PCs sold per year since 2010 but estimates that there are still more than 1.5 billion PCs still in use.

The total universe of smartphones totals nearly 1.3 billion today, according to Evans.

Tablets, meanwhile, which will probably start outselling PCs next year, are still a distant third in terms of installed base at roughly 400 million.
