Even Spider-Man and Buzz Lightyear may be no match for these stiff winds.
City officials said Monday it’s a game-day decision whether the 16 giant balloons scheduled to fly in Thursday’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will get off the ground, as forecasters called for a cold, blustery day with wind gusts topping 35 mph.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said cops would huddle with reps from the city’s Office of Emergency Management to determine if it’s safe for the huge inflatables to fly at full height, lower to the ground — or not at all.
“We have a sergeant assigned to each of the balloons. They can be lowered . . .
to the ground or the determination can be made not to fly. But we make it with OEM,” Kelly said.
“I have long experience in this. I held a turkey balloon when I worked in Macy’s when I was in high school. I’m proud of it,” the city’s top cop recalled.
Parade officials have said the balloons would remain grounded if the winds top 34 mph.
