Firefighters rescue wheelchair-bound woman from blaze

Firefighters rescued a wheelchair-bound woman from a raging Brooklyn fire that left three others critically injured, authorities said.

More than 120 firefighters battled the blaze, which broke out at the Pink Houses at 1165 Stanley Ave. near Hemlock Street in East New York around 12:30 p.m.

FDNY officials said the wheelchair woman left her chair and tried to climb out a window to escape when she was overcome by smoke. A second woman was found unconscious in the same room and a third woman was found unconscious in a hall, they said.

A fourth victim was an asthmatic 14-year-old boy who had to be rescued after suffering from smoke inhalation.

Cat Ragnauth, 25, was driving by the apartment building when he saw the flames “just shooting out the window. They were going up to the fifth floor.”

“The firefighters just jumped in, got the ladders up and started smashing windows before going in,” Ragnauth said. “I’m proud of them. They did a great job.”

Survivors praised the FDNY. “We could’ve all been dead,” said Olga Francesi, 73, who lived on the fourth floor.

The two-alarm blaze was brought under control in about 40 minutes.
