Woman critical after being hit by NYPD vehicle

A woman was critically injured Friday night after an NYPD vehicle slammed into her as she crossed the street on the Upper East Side, authorities said.

The 40-year-old pedestrian was struck at 6:15 p.m. on East 72nd Street at York Avenue when a cop, who witnesses described as a male in his 30s, plowed into the woman while driving southbound.

“I’ve lived here for years, and this is a bad cross section,” said Upper East Side resident Randi Good. “People are always jay-walking and cars are always trying to beat the light.”

According to authorities, the woman was rushed to Cornell Hospital in critical condition, with injuries to her neck and head. The officer was uninjured, according to cops.

“For the past five years I’ve gone to community board meetings to get signals put in on 72nd and 73rd street,” said Arlene Kaine, who has lived in the neighborhood since 2006. “The community is fed up with it. It’s non-stop problems. We’re extremely upset with the lack of traffic control.”

Police say the traffic cop stayed at the scene, and no criminality is suspected.
