Wilkerson ‘not worried’ about contract situation with Jets

Rex Ryan has a new contract, but Jets star Muhammad Wilkerson’s situation isn’t quite as clear.

Because of the collective bargaining agreement, NFL teams can exercise an option for a fifth year on rookie contracts for players — such as Wilkerson — taken in the first round of the 2011 draft. It’s a team-friendly clause, and while the defensive end can renegotiate his deal, he said Wednesday he had “no clue” what was going on with his contract.

“I’m not worried about that,” Wilkerson said while at the Super Bowl-themed Jets House near Penn Station. “I’m not worried about that. That’s why I have an agent.”

Wilkerson said he is pleased Ryan will be back after signing a contract extension.

“I’m definitely happy to have him back,” Wilkerson said. “I wanted him back. I think it’s good for the organization that he and most of the coaches are coming back. Players are comfortable with the system, so that’s a positive.”

Wilkerson still is stung by his Pro Bowl snub, and said he’d begin an offseason workout program in Houston after the Super Bowl.

“I guess my play this year didn’t cut it,” Wilkerson said. “I wasn’t picked. I felt I should have made it and I didn’t. That’s that. Maybe next year will be the year. … I’m just going to work harder.”
