DC Comics leaving Gotham for Los Angeles

The Dark Knight wants to soak up the sun.

DC Comics, home to Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, is moving its operations from New York City to Warner Bros.’s lot in Burbank, Calif., where it will join the rest of DC Entertainment’s movie and television operations.

Diane Nelson, the president of Time Warner-owned DC Entertainment, sent out a staff memo announcing the decision to exit the metropolis by 2015.

Time Warner folded DC Comics into its studio operations in 2009 and renamed it DC Entertainment, reflecting its focus on churning out movies, TV shows and consumer products.

DC Comics was founded in New York 70 years ago and employs more than 100 staff. The fictional Gotham City — Batman’s place of birth — is modeled on lower Manhattan.

The Big Apple has also provided a backdrop for many of the movies based on DC Comic characters, with Grand Central Terminal featuring large in 1978 “Superman” movie.

The final Batman installment, “The Dark Knight Rises,” was filmed in the city as well.

Nelson told staff in a memo that there would be management meetings next week with staff to discuss a year-long plan to move the staff to Southern California.

DC Entertainment didn’t immediately return a call for comment for the move, which was first reported by fan site Comic Book Resources.
