LSU assistant eyed for Jets’ special teams job

LSU special teams coach Thomas McGaughey is the top candidate to land the Jets’ special teams coordinator position, according to a report from coachingsearch.com.

The Jets are hiring their second special teams coordinator in as many years after Ben Kotwica left to take the same job with the Redskins after serving one year. McGaughey has been at LSU since 2011. He was the Giants’ assistant special teams coordinator in 2007-10. He also has worked for the Chiefs and Broncos.

Jets coach Rex Ryan told The Post this week that the team is in no hurry to fill the position.

Training camp site in flux

The Jets may be moving their training camp home this summer.

The team posted an article on its website Friday saying it was exploring options for where to hold training camp. The Jets have gone to SUNY Cortland the last two years and four of the last five. This is an option year for the Jets, so they could choose to re-up with Cortland, find another location or have camp at their training facility in Florham Park.

“SUNY Cortland’s been great to us,” said general manager John Idzik in the story. “They’re extremely hospitable and the campus is a terrific setting for our team to bond and prepare for the upcoming season. At this time, we simply wish to perform our due diligence to ensure we have the best possible environment for our camp.”

The Jets have a beautiful training center that would be ideal for the practice fields, medical facilities and the convenience of not moving everything. However, Ryan believes the team bonds when it is away from home. The Jets’ home also is not set up in a way that is easy for fans to watch practice. The team may look to college host that is closer to its fan base in New York City and Long Island.
