Ow! It’s painful as heel: Survey shows 1-hour heel limit

These heels aren’t made for walkin’!

It takes just one hour, six minutes and 48 seconds before the average woman’s feet begin to feel the agony of being strapped into high heels, a study has found.

And some can’t even make it that long — with 20 percent of women saying the pain kicks in after just 10 minutes.

But nearly half of all women admit they are willing to suffer for fashion and cram their tootsies into the too-tall shoes, the survey by Britain’s College of Podiatry found.

The school surveyed 2,000 men and women.

Only 12 percent of men said they would purposely wear uncomfortable shoes.

“It’s shocking how little regard we show for our feet,” said Lorraine Jones, a podiatrist at the college.

New Yorker and high-heel aficionado Larrita Jackson, 31, wasn’t surprised at the results but said she has her own strategy for easing her pain.

“I have two secrets,” she told The Post. “First, you always buy heels one or one and a half sizes bigger.

“You have to leave room for your feet to expand so they don’t cramp,” she said.

Then, “because they are bigger than they should be, you can use insoles.”

The method allows her to stand in heels for up to 12 hours without pain.

And, for her, it’s worth it.

“It’s that extra va-va-voom that heels give — that feminine prowess,” Jackson explained.

“It makes everything look longer, and it puts you up higher. I feel different in heels. They are important.”

But there is a caveat.

“Now, stilettos. We’re not built to be on them for more than four hours, so I always carry a pair of flats in my bag,” she said.

The study also found that 28 percent of women said they’ve kicked off their shoes to dance in a club or at a bar because of aching feet, and 37 percent admit having walked home barefoot for the same reason.

Lee Ann MacDonald, 53, owns more than 40 pairs of heels and boasts that she’d never be among that group.

“I would suffer for fashion. I can go a good three to four hours before it starts hurting,” MacDonald said proudly.

“I don’t take them off because that’s when it starts hurting. If you take them off, then you’re dead in the water.”
