INSIDE THE MATCHUPS

METS: After a three-game stretch in which he allowed 11 earned runs over 16 innings (6.19 ERA), Hefner’s made a strong case that he should stay in the rotation. The second-year pitcher has tossed 19 innings in three starts since May 24, striking out 19 and surrendering just six runs (2.84 ERA).

CARDINALS: Wacha, a 21-year-old rookie, has been a mixed bag in two big-league starts. He dominated the Royals, tossing seven two-hit, one-run innings, but struggled against the Diamondbacks his last go-round, allowing six earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.

STAT SO?

METS: The Mets’ past six home victories all have come by scoring in the team’s last at-bat, the longest such streak in franchise history. It dates back to April 24, when Jordany Valdespin drilled a walk-off grand slam vs. the Dodgers.

CARDINALS: The Mets will likely have to earn each run against St. Louis: The Cardinals have committed an N.L.-low 22 errors this season, and their fielding percentage, .991, was tied with Baltimore for tops in the majors.
