Mets’ Young anxious to make Citi debut

PHILADELPHIA — Eric Young Jr. is anxiously awaiting his initial game at Citi Field with the Mets, but his first major impact in the new uniform came at Citizens Bank Park last night.

With a handful of family members from his native New Brunswick, N.J., in attendance, Young finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the Mets’ 4-3 win over the Phillies.

“The first game in New York is going to be the crazy one,” said Young, who arrived from the Rockies on Wednesday in a trade for pitcher Collin McHugh and was playing his third game with the Mets.

Young doubled leading off the fourth inning against Cole Hamels and scored on David Wright’s RBI single. In the fifth, Young stroked a two-run double with two outs that tied the game at 3-3.

“I thought he hit the ball very well all night long, and he works the middle of the field. He doesn’t try to do too much,” manager Terry Collins said. “He knows exactly what kind of player he is. He just tries to put his bat on the ball and lets his legs work for him.”

* Wright said he still is waiting to have a discussion with MLB officials about the criteria for selecting participants in next month’s Home Run Derby on the eve of the All-Star Game at Citi Field.

Wright, the NL captain for the Home Run Derby, said he has not contacted any potential participants to gauge their interest in the event.

* In Triple-A Las Vegas, Ike Davis hit two solo home runs in the 51s 5-3 loss to Tuscon. Davis, who also hit two homers Thursday night, is hitting .333.

* LaTroy Hawkins was not with the team yesterday, after leaving with permission to attend a close friend’s funeral. Hawkins is expected back with the Mets today.

* Jenrry Mejia is close to pitching in a game in Port St. Lucie, according to assistant general manager John Ricco.

The right-hander, who was shut down in spring training with elbow tendinitis, has made progress throwing off a mound.
