GM Alderson unveils Mets’ 6-month plan

The Mets held a question-and-answer session with 350 season ticket-holders yesterday morning at Citi Field, and general manager Sandy Alderson said the team will be capable of adding substantial pieces soon, and the need for patience is almost over.

“I believe in the next six months or so, we’ll be in position to make some significant acquisitions, either by free agency or trade,” Alderson said. “It’s going to be up to us to make the right [decisions]. We’re working at it.

“Problem is, that at some point the best thing you can do is have a little patience. I’ve been preaching that for the past couple of years and I know it’s wearing thin. But we’re almost there.”

Besides Alderson, the 45-minute Q&A featured manager Terry Collins, pitchers Matt Harvey, Bobby Parnell and Dillon Gee, and catcher John Buck. Alderson was also asked whether he would consider trading prospects for a top hitter such as the Marlins’ Giancarlo Stanton.

“That opportunity has never arisen,” the GM said. “When it does, we’ll address it.”

* Collins had said he would play Jordany Valdespin through today since the Mets were facing six straight righties, and he said yesterday he likely will extend the evaluation by playing him vs. righties in the Braves series starting tomorrow.

“I would probably play him against the right-handed pitching a little bit,” Collins said. “I want to see how he does.”

Valdespin went hitless in 16 straight at-bats before yesterday’s eighth-inning RBI single. He also committed an error when he overthrew Jonathon Niese by 15 feet when tossing him the ball after Cody Ransom’s first-inning single. The error allowed Ransom to get to second base.

Collins also said Lucas Duda could become a first base option if Ike Davis remains in the minors and Valdespin struggles. Daniel Murphy would slide back to second, and Collins said Duda or Justin Turner would play first.

Collins had previously said Duda would remain in left field, but that was before Valdespin began his second-base audition, which moved Murphy to first. … The Mets recalled righty Carlos Torres and demoted Greg Burke.

Duda said playing first is no problem.

“Whatever they need me to do, I’m ready to do,” he said.

Collins is hopeful Frank Francisco (elbow) will pitch in a rehab game this week. … The Mets recalled righty Carlos Torres and demoted Greg Burke.
