Autistic girl jumps from car on SI Expressway; in critical condition

A 13-year-old autistic girl is fighting for her life tonight after suddenly jumping out of her family’s moving car on the Staten Island Expressway in Fort Wadsworth, law-enforcement sources said.

The youngster was seated in the backseat of her mother’s 2011 Nissan Rouge in the eastbound middle lane of the highway near Lilly Pond Road when for some reason, she opened the car door and threw herself out into the oncoming traffic, cops said.

The child rolled on the ground as cars whizzed past her at at least 50 mph, cops said. Her mother was also driving 50 mph at the time of the incident, cops said.

A driver stopped short when he saw the girl’s body flying toward his vehicle, cops said.

The driver of the 2010 Honda Element behind him swerved out of the way and ran the young girl over, cops said.

The girl is listed in critical condition and was undergoing surgery for internal injuries and a broken leg at Staten Island University North Hospital, cops said.
