John Guyton got a phone call from Donald Trump after winning the 91st Met Open yesterday.
“He just said congratulations and good going,” said Guyton, the 29-year-old first-year assistant pro at Trump National in Briarcliff who recorded a two-putt birdie on the third playoff hole to defeat Atlantic’s Rick Hartmann at Canoe Brook’s South Course in Summit, N.J.
Guyton, who earned $23,000, shot a 5-under 67 to finish the third round tied at 6-under 210 with Hartmann, the two-time Met Open champ who carded a 71.
After matching pars on the first two playoff holes, Hartmann and Guyton both reached the par-five 12th in two shots. Hartmann took three putts from the back fringe while Guyton walked away with a two-putt and the victory.
Trump National-Bedminster assistant pro James Herman, the second-round co-leader with Bayonne’s Anthony Aruta, finished one shot back after shooting a 72. Aruta shot a 76 and finished tied for 11th.
