POSADA WON’T RULE OUT METS

Jorge Posada’s preference is to remain with the Yankees, but he wasn’t ready to say last night that he’s definitely returning to The Bronx.

With the Yanks’ exclusive negotiation period with their free agents set to expire today, Posada, speaking to reporters at halftime of last night’s Knicks-Heat game at the Garden, indicated there’s still a chance he could be playing for the Mets next season. He said the Yankees and Mets are the only teams in the running.

“We’re working on it, we’re working on it with the Yankees,” Posada said, noting that the two sides are close to reaching an agreement. “We’re going to hear from the Mets [tomorrow].”

But there’s also a good chance the Yankees will say the magic words today, negating any opportunity for Mets GM Omar Minaya to make his pitch. It’s believed Posada is seeking additional length to the $40 million offer the Yanks have offered over three years.

Posada met for lunch with Yankees GM Brian Cashman on Friday and said it was a productive session. The Yankees also want to re-sign Mariano Rivera before he hits the open market.

“My first priority is the Yankees,” Posada said. “My heart is with the Yankees. Hopefully we can get something done.”

If Posada re-signs with the Yankees, Paul Lo Duca’s chances of returning to the Mets would increase, but Minaya also is expected to examine other catching options, including Colorado’s Yorvit Torrealba.
