City Slickers 1991

Sunday, 4 p.m., IFC

A really hilarious and sometimes touching movie about three middle aged big city guys — Daniel Stern, Billy Crystal and Bruno Kirby — who are each having a midlife crisis and decide to rough it on a dude ranch and cattle-drive from New Mexico to Colorado. Jack Palance is Curly, the cattle driver who teaches them a thing or two. Palance was such a scene stealer that he won Best Supporting Actor for his role, and then accepted his Oscar by doing a one-handed push-up.

The Godfather Part II 1974

Tuesday, 8 p.m., AMC

Rarely does a sequel win more Oscars than the original, but that’s just what happened here. The film moves back and forth from NYC in the 1920s and the life of young Vito Corleone (Robert DeNiro) to that of his son and successor, Michael (Al Pacino) at Lake Tahoe and Cuba in the 1950s as he expands his gambling empire. Gripping.

Wall Street 1987

Thursday, 8 p.m., Sundance

Michael Douglas won a Best Actor Oscar for his role as Gordon Gekko in this Oliver Stone film about a ruthless Wall Street titan who takes a young wannabe, Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen), under his wing. As Bud becomes enmeshed in the “Greed is Good” world of Gekko, he grows estranged from the values of his blue- collar father (Martin Sheen).

Muriel’s Wedding 1994

Friday, 10 p.m., Flix

Australian actress Toni Colette, who stars in the CBS fall series “Hostages,” burst upon the scene in this winning comedy about an odd young woman (and ABBA fan) who wants the wedding of her dreams. There’s one slight problem. She’s never had a date. Muriel’s maturation process is enchanting. The soundtrack is catchy. And Rachel Griffiths, who also went on to have her own success in Hollywood, plays Muriel’s friend. What more could you want?
