This week’s couple: From sci-fi to sushi

Good conversation on a date usually indicates something special is happening between two people. For Erica, 28, and Daniel, 30, their date at the romantic sushi restaurant Megu in Tribeca was, in a word, wordy. Over sake and sashimi, the two nerded out about books and science-fiction. But unfortunately, talking about fantasy fiction and other niche genres didn’t leave them buzzing at the end of the date.

Erica arrived after me and I noticed how pretty she was. We were led downstairs and seated at the sushi bar.

She is a children’s book editor so we talked about our favorites. We’re both fans of “Ender’s Game” and talked about the upcoming movie. Erica was into nerdy fantasy and sci-fi more than most girls, which I appreciated. She also wowed me with her vocabulary.

Everything at Megu was perfect. The sushi chef was friendly, the food and sake were amazing, and the ambiance was great.

I started thinking about the number exchange, to do it or not. Erica is attractive and fun and we had a lot to talk about, but I didn’t feel a spark. But I figured it was worth meeting again, so I asked for her number.

She said:

Daniel just came from work so he looked dapper in a suit and tie and he was early, which I always appreciate.

We talked about everything: books, travel and movies. We’re excited about the upcoming “Ender’s Game” movie. I also noticed Daniel’s a gentleman. When we tasted sakes, he let me try it first. I didn’t quite get his sense of humor, but I guess he’s earnest!

Megu was special. We had bar seats and watched the head sushi chef hand-cut every piece of sushi in our tasting menu, which he presented and described. I’ve never eaten so much fresh sashimi before!

While I think Daniel is an interesting, smart guy, I’m not sure I felt that spark. But at the end of the date, he asked for my number and I gave it to him. I don’t see us dating romantically, but I enjoyed talking to him.
