SANCHEZ SOLID IN SCRIMMAGE

CORTLAND — After a week of sparsely-attended training camp practices, more than 6,000 fans turned up for last night’s Jets green and white scrimmage.

The person they all wanted to see most was rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez, and he didn’t disappoint.

Sanchez, playing two of his possessions with the first-team offense, finished 9-of-16 for 70 yards, but he had four passes dropped on him.

“Sanchez did well,” Rex Ryan said. “We all wanted to see what he could do. We wanted to see poise and accuracy and he showed it. He wanted to show what he could do.”

Sanchez said he was jacked up for the scrimmage, saying he “couldn’t eat anything” in the hours before.

“It was like a game-day mode,” he said. “I put in the iPod and laid down for a little bit, relaxed my mind, came out ready to work, and it was really on today. I felt great.”

Jets owner Woody Johnson, watched his prized $50 million quarterback play and said he was impressed.

“You always want to see, particularly after a draft, what a guy looks like and this was the most real situation we’ve had for him,” Johnson said.

Asked if he made a “mini statement” in the scrimmage, Sanchez said, “It’s too early to tell and for Coach Ryan to decide. They’ll judge whether this is a statement or not.”

Kellen Clemens was 5-of-7 for 26 yards and, after throwing six interceptions in 11-on-11 drills the last week, he didn’t turn the ball over, which he felt was a positive.

The glaring negative, however, was the fact that neither Sanchez (five possessions) nor Clemens (four) led the offense to a touchdown.

The offense had 12 possessions and scored once — on a reverse by wide receiver Paul Raymond.

Only Erik Ainge, the No. 3 quarterback, led the team to points.

Rookie RB Shonn Greene, who has been nursing a tender ankle, ran hard and made some plays.

“We’ve got a pretty good stable of backs, but I would think [Greene] will get his share of carries,” Ryan said.

Dropped passes came from WR Britt Davis, who flubbed two, RB Leon Washington and TE Jack Simmons. … CB James Ihedigbo, who’s having a good camp, had the only sack of the scrimmage — on Clemens. … RB Thomas Jones delivered the biggest blow when he bull-dozed Donald Strickland on a run.

The players have today off, their first of camp, and Ryan and a number of them are going to Cooperstown to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame. Kicker Jay Feely and some other players are going to see some NASCAR racing and some others are playing golf.

The Jets return to the field tomorrow for an 8:15 a.m. practice and another in the afternoon.
