Revis dominates Owens — again

As last night’s 19-13 Jets victory wore on, Darrelle Revis could see he was breaking Terrell Owens’ spirit.

Few things produce a more satisfying feeling for a cornerback.

For the second time this season, Revis stymied Owens, the Bills’ star receiver, and made him a nonfactor.

Despite having nine passes thrown his way, Owens finished the game with just three catches for 31 of the quietest yards you will see. In the teams’ first meeting last month, Revis held Owens to three catches for 13 yards. That’s six catches for 44 yards and no touchdowns in two games for the Hall of Fame-bound wide receiver. Revis also sealed the victory with an interception while defending Owens with 2:02 remaining in the game.

“You could see he was frustrated,” Revis said of Owens. “When he’s not getting the ball, he tends to get frustrated and I could see it in his body language.”

Revis had talked during the week about how when Owens gets involved early in the game he tends to be a front-runner and that’s when he has his best games. Last night, as in the previous meeting, Revis never let Owens breathe early in the game.

“That’s how you play him, by getting in his face,” Revis said. “When they’re getting him the ball, he’s the type of guy that’s really upbeat. But I was pressing him and they tried to motion him to get him open.”

Revis, who has shut down four of the game’s best receivers this season — Andre Johnson, Randy Moss twice, Steve Smith last Sunday and Owens twice — called it “a challenge every week” going up against opposing teams’ best.

At the end of the night, though, Revis, who had two interceptions in Sunday’s win over the Panthers and has five on the season, said he wasn’t completely satisfied, because he had his hands on two Ryan Fitzpatrick passes that he felt he should have picked off.

“We gave him some grief about those,” safety Kerry Rhodes said.

“I’m a little upset about that,” Revis said. “Those were big plays in the game and I’ve got to get those.”

Nevertheless, Revis did shut down Owens.

“Revis is amazing,” safety Jim Leonhard said. “He catches as many passes as the receivers he goes up against. He allows us to do so many things on defense because of how good he is.”
